I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression almost all my life. I’m doing therapy and taking it one day at a time. I still struggle quite a bit, so I keep looking for different ways to distract myself and stay sane.

Dyeing Fabric: A New Crafting Adventure

One of the things I recently picked up is fabric dyeing. Crafting has always been a big part of my life (I do many different crafts!), and this one was a spontaneous discovery.

I had to rearrange my closet to get rid of old clothes, but I’m someone who has a hard time letting go (figures!). Some of my clothes were really worn out, their colors faded, but I still loved them too much to throw them away. Then it hit me—why not dye them and give them a second life?

Off I went to Amazon, found some fabric dye, and placed my order. I had no idea if it would work or how well, but I figured it was worth a shot. I followed the simple instructions, and voilà—my clothes looked amazing! My first try was far from perfect (hello, patchy spots), but after a couple more attempts, I got the hang of it.

Not only was it fun, but it was also incredibly relaxing. I was so immersed in the process that, for a while, my anxious thoughts took a backseat. It turned out to be the perfect mix of mindfulness and creativity. Plus, I got to revive my favorite pieces instead of tossing them out. Here’s a small piece I dyed as a test—it went from dirty white to a gorgeous blue:

Some of my other clothes still need a few finishing touches, but they turned out great. I even revived my black jeans from eight years ago—and I love how they look now!

Final Thoughts

Full disclosure: I haven’t fully washed them to see if the dye bleeds. I did a light wash, and so far, so good! I’ll update here if anything changes.

If you’re looking for a way to upcycle old clothes and have a fun, relaxing activity, give fabric dyeing a shot. Any fabric dye should work—you don’t have to use the exact ones I did.

Next up on my list: Tie-dyeing! Fingers crossed it goes just as well. Until next time—Happy Healing!
